I was born and raised in Glasgow.
Outside professional life, I have a longstanding interest in Asia, particularly its history, legal development and cultural traditions. Outside professional life, I have a longstanding interest in Asia, particularly its history, legal development and cultural traditions. Over a number of years, I have travelled extensively throughout the region and return regularly. Cities such as Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong have left a particular impression on me, both for their historical depth and their capacity for reinvention.
My interest in the region is not confined to travel. I read widely on Asian history and legal systems, and in particular biographies by and about some of Asia’s most prominent political and historical figures. I am drawn to how individuals operate within larger institutional frameworks, and how legal and political systems evolve in response to economic, social and cultural change. That perspective has encouraged a degree of patience with complexity and a sensitivity to historical context - qualities which I find equally relevant in professional life, particularly when dealing with matters that extend across jurisdictions or generations.
I also enjoy Asian cuisine - Malaysian dishes such as beef rendang and roti canai being particular favourites.

Writing forms an established part of my professional life. I contribute regularly to legal journals and professional publications on matters relating to private wealth law, succession and taxation. This has included articles for practitioner-focused journals as well as commentary addressing developments in legislation and case law.

Writing forms an established part of my professional life. I contribute regularly to legal journals and professional publications on matters relating to private wealth law, succession and taxation. This has included articles for practitioner-focused journals as well as commentary addressing developments in legislation and case law.
In addition to journal writing, I have contributed to a number of practitioner reference works and legal texts. These include authorship of the chapter on the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964 in International Succession Laws (Bloomsbury Professional), a publication written by practitioners from multiple jurisdictions and used by lawyers, trust practitioners, accountants and financial institutions as a comparative reference resource.
My writing reflects a continuing interest in the doctrinal foundations of private wealth law and the way in which legal systems respond to cross-border and generational considerations.
